Dalcross CastleDalcross Castle and its sister Castle Stuart were built by the Lovat family in the early 17th Century. They stand a few miles apart, east of Inverness. Both are ‘A’ Listed buildings which are classified as fortalices like Craigievar and Cawdor. They were at the transition between wholly fortified and wholly domestic architecture. Dalcross has two linked gabled towers with a connecting spiral stair on the internal angle. In the early 18th Century a wing was added to the north and this was altered in the late 19th C by the local architect Carruthers in an Arts and Crafts style.Maxwell and Company were commissioned to carry out renovations, alterations and conversion work to the Castle, outbuildings and adjacent policies to convert the Castle to a family home. The brief contained both exterior and interior references. Externally it required restoration and rehabilitation of the historic structure including stone walls, slated roofs, leadwork and rainwater plumbing. Internally it required part restoration and part adaptation within the discipline of the historic plan and structure. The exterior and interior works were carried out with the minimum of intrusion so that the original and new work conjoined discreetly. All services infrastructure were renewed. A limited palette of new, mainly natural materials was used and recycling of existing materials and components with careful sourcing of new artefacts ensured a consistency and cohesion of design and execution. The Civic Trust Award of 2005 states “the building as it now stands is both a celebration of the past and testament to the possibilities, through creative imagination and supportive patronage, for the transformation of a historic structure to the mores of the present and the future.” |
