Dalgrambich SteadingMaxwell and Company were commissioned to prepare a design for the conversion of the 19th Century stone steading to a family residence.The accommodation requirements were for a minimum of 3 bedrooms to be provided for the family (2 interconnected for possible future nursing care) with additional bedrooms/en-suite facilities as the building allowed. The layout creates a fluid series of public spaces taking advantage of the linear plan and creating a sitting room, dining room and farmhouse kitchen all benefiting from the double aspect around a courtyard. An adjoining building was converted to a garage. The existing building was dismantled leaving only the external walls. A new insulated concrete floor incorporating underfloor heating was constructed. The intermediate floor of timber, spans between external walls which were framed and insulated. The roof was reconstructed with raised collar tie trusses and finished in European slates. The main living space has exposed trusses and purlins in Douglas fir. New dormers and rooflights provide daylight to upper floor rooms. The design utilises all existing ground floor wall openings with only a small number of additional openings. External carpentry is predominantly larch and external joinery is oak. The walls were picked and pointed in lime mortar. Internal finishes are oak doors, skirtings and architraves, throughout. The living, dining rooms and study have oak flooring. The kitchen and utility have travertine slabs and the entrance hall has riven Caithness stone. The main stair is a cantilevered design of steel, glass and oak. “The re-working of a single storey steading as a one and a half storey courtyard house has been impressively and consistently carried out while retaining the ambience and scale of the vernacular rural structure, enhanced by architectural innovation.” Inverness Civic Trust Panel. |
