Easter Auchintoul

Easter Auchintoul was a working farm steading dating from the 19th century. It had grown organically from a single storey cottage to a significant but utilitarian group of vernacular stone and timber buildings.

The preliminary brief for the creation of an estate shooting lodge anticipated renovation of the steading.  However, the architects reviewed this strategy in light of detailed survey inspection, and agreed with the client that the safer option was to rebuild, modelling the design on the original form. To ensure that the new steading remained faithful to the original, many of the existing reusable materials were incorporated in the construction.

The brief required the lodge to have family accommodation of three bedrooms, with the social rooms separated from the guest bedrooms, utility rooms and the housekeeper’s to maximise occupational flexibility. The family rooms were arranged along the embankment overlooking the river whilst the remaining accommodation linked to it in a linear design forming a courtyard.

Traditional materials with high thermal mass were used throughout. All the original field stone was reincorporated and supplemented by dressed sandstone details. The roof structure was traditionally framed using both green oak and Douglas fir. The roof was covered in reclaimed Ballachulish slate. All internal walls were masonry finished in hard plaster. Floors were insulated, solid construction incorporating underfloor heating.

The project won an Inverness Civic Trust Award in 1999 for a building which made an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment.
