Scatwell Ceilidh HallThe hall is one of the estate buildings of Scatwell which lies on the banks of the river Conon in Strathconon. The estate is a 19th C designed landscape and many of the properties including the ceilidh hall are listed buildings. The hall was built for local community social gatherings. It is a 1¾ storey stone and slate building approximately 15 metres long abutting a group of cottages beside the walled garden. The estate was sold in 2005 and many of the buildings are now individually owned. Our clients bought the hall and a small area of garden to convert to a home. The building originally comprised two spaces: the entrance vestibule/kitchen area and the meeting hall, all on one level. There were very few openings and a narrow plan with high internal volume. The brief required a main social space with separate utility functions and two double bedrooms. The key criteria for the conversion were simplicity and a sense of space and light. The majority of the ground floor is utilised as open plan kitchen/living space which retains the volume of the original hall. A mezzanine gallery passes through this double height space connecting each gable end bedroom. There is a limited palette of materials with unifying details and colours. The introduction of patent glazing and conservation roof lights supplements the small number of existing windows. The South facing patent glazing and new patio door both maximise solar gain. This combined with the highly insulated timber frame creates a thermally efficient building. |
