Skibo Health SpaAs part of Maxwell and Company’s comprehensive work for The Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle, we were commissioned to convert Andrew Carnegie’s ‘B’ listed 19thC former electric generating house and garages to a health spa and gymnasium. The buildings are sited next to the grand Victorian swimming pool overlooking Loch Ospisdale beside the Dornoch Firth. The project was executed in two phases. Phase 1 comprised of external renovation to make the building wind and waterproof and to strengthen the structure. This involved renewal of all leadwork, restoration of the slate roof using Westmorland slates, construction of new oak framed feature trusses and reinforcement of foundations. New windows were incorporated in a style matching the originals. All the services infrastructure was renewed. Phase 2 comprised of fitting out the interiors to make a reception and gymnasium in the former garages and four treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge, outdoor sheltered terrace / sitting area, staff and laundry room at the generator house. The design of the spa was based on the four elements: wind, water, earth and fire. Natural materials such as oak, limestone, Westmorland stone, and glass were integrated in a variety of ways with a harmonious geometry. Most of the fittings were purpose made to the architect’s designs such as doors, reception display unit, seats, ironmongery, changing room fittings and the kitchenette. The spa opened in 2005 and has proved very popular with members. |
